About Adopt-an-Angel
Adopt-An-Angel is a non-profit organization that I feel particularly connected to. It was started in honor of a sweet boy who realized that some kids were never visited by Santa, simply due to their foster or low income status. It broke his heart to imagine and he set to work doing jobs after school to make sure the particular kid he had met received a gift on Christmas day.
After that thoughtful and generous boy's passing (at too young an age), his sweet mama, Georgia Butterworth, started Adopt-An-Angel in his honor.
Every year Adopt-An-Angel works with Alameda County Protective Services and Terra Firma to identify nearly 1000 children in need. Through their social workers, those children are welcomed to name three items they wish to receive for Christmas and we turn to the community for help.
Wish lists are reviewed and added to individual tags for each child. A community member may select a tag and fulfill all three items on the wish list. The items are then collected and taken to a warehouse where they are wrapped by other member of the community and distributed to the children in need.
Why should you care?
It's hard for many of us to imagine but there are children in our very own communities who celebrate Christmas, who believe in Santa, and who have still never received a Christmas present. In many ways, the world hasn't shown up for these children. They were born into families that struggled to give them proper care, for whatever reason. While it's true that a Christmas gift alone will not change their trajectory, it's a small and beautiful symbol that the world has not given up on them and that wonderful surprises can be theirs. I can't personally save every child, but I choose to give them this little piece of hope (in addition to always voting for policies that support social safety nets of course). I know for a fact these older kids will remember gifts like this for the rest of their lives, and I promise you it has an impact.
What's up with the bikes?
Adopt-An-Angel is very special in that they encourage and never deny a request for a bicycle from kids. Bikes represent freedom, transportation, exercise, social options and FUN!! Kids within the foster system may not have an adult to cart them everywhere, but a bike can get them places!! Yes, babies are super fun to shop for, but if you have the means, please consider selecting a child who has requested a bike for Christmas. Bikes truly can change lives in ways that a toy generally won't. Don't forget to include that helmet!
Thank you for helping to support a cause that means so much to me
and to our community!
Please support and thank our community partners!
